Dear Mr Pervez,

My Board has provided funding during 2014/15 to commission Birmingham City Council, on behalf of National Trading Standards to carry out some focused work in relation to problems associated with Hajj/Umrah pilgrimages. This will include:

  • Birmingham Trading Standards will work with partners and the National Trading Standards Intelligence Team to identify organised crime groups. Where these have been identified then if appropriate the National Trading Standards Central England Scambuster Team will investigate these matters nationally. Where the matter should be referred to the City of London Police this will be done.
  • Birmingham Trading Standards will seek to develop the necessary skills within local authority trading standards to enable a through and consistent response to Hajj complaints.
  • Birmingham Trading Standards will work with Scambusters Teams and the City of London Police to ensure organised crime groups are tackled appropriately.

In case of problem with over pricing of Hajj/Umrah packages, you might consider referring the matter to the Competition and Markets Authority who can investigate these types of issues.

Yours Sincerely,

toby-harris

Lord Toby Harris
Chairman, National Trading Standards Board
