Letter from Jo Swinson MP – Minister, BIS on the issue of exploitation/Hajj packages price hike
1 October 2014
Dear Mr Pervez,
I have noted the Resolution of the Association’s Hajj Conference concerning sales practices in the Hajj and Umrah Pilgrimage travel market and sympathise with those who fall victim to unscrupulous travel operators.
Of course, operating in a market with high demand and limited supply does not provide any excuse for trading practices which are not permitted in the law. For example, the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs) require that any price indications must be transparent and not misleading.
It remains as important as ever that dissatisfied pilgrims are directed and encouraged to bring their complaints and evidence to the attention of the authorities.
Jo Swinson MP
Minister for Employment Relations and Consumer Affairs
